THE BATTERY

Batteries filled with acid must be given their initial charge within one year.

First Charge Instructions for Filled, Uncharged, Varley Batteries.

The Varley is a lead-acid battery having the same general, although greatly improved, characteristics as all lead-acid batteries ; the main difference lies in its construction. The plates and separators are assembled and compressed together forming a solid porous block. The acid which is required for the working of the battery is held by absorption in the block of plates and separators and no gravity readings are therefore necessary, or can be taken.

To make ready for service a filled but uncharged battery, the following instructions should be carried out.

Remove sealing tape, unscrew vent stoppers, and if fitted, break away sealing discs in the vents.
Put on charge. Refer to chart below for rates and length of charge.
During the whole of the first charge period the electrolyte level should be maintained +-in. above plate/separator block. For this, use distilled water only. Keep vent stoppers in—do not screw down.
The first charge period should be continuous. If for any major reason the current is cut, the open circuit standing time should be allowed for.
The charge is complete when all cells are gassing freely and cell voltages remain constant for five consecutive half-hourly readings.
After charge, allow battery to stand to complete absorption, then, after a period of 30 minutes any electrolyte should be removed. Dry top of battery, screw down vent stoppers and coat terminals and connector bars slightly with Vaseline before putting into service.
A fully charged battery should read at least 6.3 volts on open circuit.

Type MC.7/12.

First Charge	11 amperes for 60 hours.
Re-charge ¾	¾ amperes for 24 hours.
Freshening Charge	1½ amperes for 6 hours.

The use of an A.H. meter is strongly recommended.

Maintenance and Re-charging Instructions for Fully Charged Batteries.

When not in Use.

To keep the battery in good condition until it is put into service or during any time that it is not in use it should be given a freshening ' charge once every month. For charge rate and length of freshening ' charge refer above.

When in use the Motor Cycle dynamo will maintain the battery in a charged condition. Once a month the battery needs topping up with a small quantity of distilled water in order to maintain the plates and separators in a moist condition. Normally a teaspoonful of distilled water per vent is sufficient. After standing for 15 minutes all surplus liquid should then be removed by siphoning or shaking out if necessary. Topping up should be carried out after and not before a journey.

The state of charge of a Varley may be checked at any time, by using a moving coil voltmeter.

The following voltages will indicate the approximate state of charge :—

Fully discharged	5.7 volts or under.
Partially discharged	6.15 „ ,,
Open circuit fully charged	6.3 volts or over.
On charge, fully charged	7.8 " *" "*

Recharging on the Bench.

If the battery is allowed to get abnormally dry it should be topped up with distilled water before and during charge. After charge all surplus liquid should be removed.

In the event of the battery falling off in capacity after it has been in constant use for some considerable time, it should be topped up with weak acid instead of distilled water for one or two charges.
